How to extract audio from a video
- Add your videos
Drop one or more files: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, and audio files like M4A work too. Each one shows its length, and the selected file shows its waveform.
- Trim and choose a format
Drag the handles on the waveform to cut silence or keep just a section, and press play to hear the selection. Pick MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG and a bitrate.
- Convert and download
Press Convert. A single file downloads straight away; with several files, each gets its own download button plus a Download all (ZIP) option.

Which audio format should I pick?
| Format | Type | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Lossy | Plays on practically every device, car stereo and app. The safe default. |
| WAV | Uncompressed | Editing in a DAW or video editor; no quality loss, but about ten times larger than MP3. |
| M4A (AAC) | Lossy | Apple devices and podcasts; slightly better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. |
| OGG (Opus) | Lossy | Voice and speech at small sizes; very efficient, but some older players can't open it. |
M4A and OGG use your browser's built-in encoder, so they're greyed out if your browser doesn't provide one. MP3 always works because it's encoded with LAME compiled to WebAssembly.
How big will the audio file be?
192 kbps × 180 s ÷ 8 = 4,320,000 bytes ≈ 4.3 MB. A 10-second stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz is 1,764,044 bytes.
For music, 192 kbps MP3 is a good balance; 320 kbps is the most MP3 allows and is worth it only for archiving or very good headphones. For speech such as lectures or interviews, 128 kbps (or Mono) is plenty and halves the size again.
Fades and loudness normalization
A short fade in and fade out (0.5 to 2 seconds) removes the click you'd otherwise hear when audio starts or stops mid-sound, which is common when you trim a clip.
Normalize loudness measures the selection the way broadcasters do (the ITU-R BS.1770 method behind LUFS) and turns it up or down to about −14 LUFS, a level many streaming services aim for. It's useful when you convert clips recorded at different volumes and want them to sound even. Peaks that would go over full scale are clipped, so very quiet recordings may need a lower target in a dedicated editor.
Videos with several audio tracks
Some MKV and MP4 files carry more than one audio track, for example two languages or a commentary. When that's the case, a track menu appears next to the play button; choose the one you want before converting. The title tag defaults to the file name and is written into the MP3, M4A or OGG so music apps show a proper name.
Why convert in the browser?
Your recordings can be private: family videos, meetings, interviews. Here the video is opened, decoded and encoded on your own device, so the audio never passes through anyone's server. It also means there's no upload wait: a 1 GB video starts converting immediately. Need the pictures rather than the sound? Video To Frames exports stills, and Video to GIF makes short animations.
Frequently asked questions
Is this video to MP3 converter free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
Is my video data safe and private?
Absolutely. Your video never leaves your device. This video to MP3 converter reads the file in your browser, decodes it there, and writes the audio back to your device. We don't store, transmit, or have any access to your video, file names, or other file information. Your privacy is 100% guaranteed.
What bitrate should I choose for MP3?
192 kbps suits most music, 128 kbps is enough for speech, and 320 kbps is the maximum MP3 supports. Higher bitrates mean larger files.
Can I convert several videos at once?
Yes. Drop multiple files; they're converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download them together as a ZIP.
Can I cut out just part of the audio?
Yes. Drag the handles on the waveform or type exact start and end times, then press play to check the selection before converting.
Does it keep the original audio quality?
Choose WAV for an uncompressed copy of the decoded audio. MP3, M4A and OGG are lossy; at 192 kbps or more the difference is hard to hear for most material.
Why is M4A or OGG greyed out?
Those formats use the audio encoder built into your browser, and some browsers don't include one. MP3 and WAV work in every supported browser.
Can I extract audio on an iPhone or Android phone?
Yes, in Safari or Chrome. Large videos take longer on a phone, and the file is saved to your Downloads or Files app.
