3 steps to extract frames from a video
This video to frames converter takes 3 steps to extract frames from a video, and nothing is uploaded.
-
Open your video
Drop a file onto the box above, click to choose one, or paste it with Ctrl+V. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV are read directly; the tool shows the resolution, length, frame rate and total frame count straight away.
-
Choose a range and a mode
Drag the handles on the timeline (or type exact times) to pick the part you want, then choose a mode such as one frame every second. The estimate shows how many frames you'll get before anything runs.
-
Download or share
Press Extract frames. Images appear in the grid as they're made. Download them all as a ZIP, save straight to a folder, copy a single frame, or build a contact sheet.
7 ways to pull frames from a video
Pick the mode that matches what you need. Every mode works on the part of the video you select on the timeline.
Keyframes only
Read just the I-frames from the file index. No full decode, so even long videos finish in seconds.
Use this modeScene changes
Detects cuts and saves one frame per shot. Turn the sensitivity up for subtle changes.
Use this modeEvery N seconds
One frame every 0.5, 1, 2 or 10 seconds. The most intuitive choice for browsing a long clip.
Use this modeEvery frame
Export the full image sequence, frame by frame, with exact frame numbers in the file names.
Use this modeA fixed number
Ask for exactly 12 (or 500) frames spread evenly across the range. Handy for previews and picking a cover.
Use this modeFrames per second
Sample at 1, 5, 24 or any frame rate. The usual setting for 3D scanning, photogrammetry and training data.
Use this modeSingle frame
Step frame by frame and capture the exact moment. Snap to sharpest picks the clearest frame nearby.
Use this modeKey features of Video To Frames Converter
The difference between this video to frames converter and others.
-
Runs in your browser
The video is decoded on your device. It is not uploaded, and no account is required.
-
Keyframes in seconds
Keyframe mode reads the file index instead of decoding every picture, so a long video can finish in seconds.
-
Download or share
Save a ZIP, write straight to a folder, or send the frames to another app in one tap.
Who uses a video to frames converter
Some of the most common jobs, and the mode that fits each one.
Thumbnails and covers
Count mode gives you 12 evenly spaced candidates; Single mode with Snap to sharpest gets the exact one without blur.
Lecture and webinar slides
Interval mode plus Skip duplicates turns a screen recording into one image per slide.
Sprite sheets and animation
Extract every frame of a short loop, then export a contact sheet as a sprite sheet.
3D scans and training data
FPS mode samples evenly for photogrammetry, Gaussian splatting or machine-learning datasets.
Evidence and analysis
Every file name carries the frame number and timecode, so each image can be traced back to the source.
Memes and reaction images
Capture the perfect moment, or turn a few seconds into a GIF with one click.
How many frames are in a video?
Multiply the length in seconds by the frame rate. That's the whole formula, and it's why exporting every frame adds up fast.
A 60-second clip at 30 fps has 1,800 frames. Taking one frame every 2 seconds gives 30 images.
These counts assume a constant frame rate. Phone videos often use a variable frame rate, so the real count can differ slightly; the tool shows the exact number it decodes. When you just need a set of stills, an interval of 1 or 2 seconds usually gives plenty of choice at a fraction of the size.
| duration | 24 fps | 25 fps | 30 fps | 60 fps | 1 per second |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0:10 | 240 | 250 | 300 | 600 | 10 |
| 0:30 | 720 | 750 | 900 | 1,800 | 30 |
| 1:00 | 1,440 | 1,500 | 1,800 | 3,600 | 60 |
| 5:00 | 7,200 | 7,500 | 9,000 | 18,000 | 300 |
| 10:00 | 14,400 | 15,000 | 18,000 | 36,000 | 600 |
| 60:00 | 86,400 | 90,000 | 108,000 | 216,000 | 3,600 |
Other ways to get frames from a video
If you'd rather use software you already have, these work too. Each has a catch, which is why a dedicated extractor is often quicker.
VLC media player
Pause on the frame and press Shift + S on Windows or Linux (Cmd + Alt + S on a Mac). VLC saves a snapshot to your Pictures folder. Good for a few stills; for many frames you'd use its scene-filter settings, which are fiddly.
FFmpeg
One frame per second from a video:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf fps=1 frame_%04d.pngPrecise and scriptable, but it's a command-line tool you have to install, and getting exact frame times right takes some reading.
A phone screenshot
Pausing and taking a screenshot is quick, but you get the screen's resolution, not the video's, plus any player controls on top. A frame extracted from a 4K clip is 3840×2160; a screenshot of the same clip is whatever your screen is.
Frequently asked questions about Video to frames
What is a video to frames converter?
A video to frames converter turns a video into still images. This one saves frames as PNG, JPG or WebP: every frame, one per second, one per scene, or a single moment you choose. It is fast and easy to use, the file never leaves your device, and no login is required. Besides downloading the frames, you can share them in one tap straight to a friend in another app.
Is this video to frames converter free?
Yes. This frame extractor is completely free, with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on the number of frames.
Is my video data safe and private?
Absolutely. Your video never leaves your device. This video to frames converter reads the file in your browser, decodes it there, and writes the frames back to your device. We don't store, transmit, or have any access to your video, file names, or other file information. Your privacy is 100% guaranteed.
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV are read directly, with H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video where your browser can decode them. If a codec isn't supported you get a specific message saying which one and what to try.
What's the difference between PNG, JPG and WebP frames?
PNG is lossless and the largest. JPG is much smaller with a tiny quality loss at the default setting of 92. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at similar quality, but some older apps can't open it.
What are keyframes and when should I use them?
Keyframes are the complete pictures a video codec stores every so often; the frames in between are stored as changes. Exporting only keyframes is very fast because nothing else needs decoding, but their spacing depends on how the video was encoded.
Can I turn a lecture video into slides?
Yes. Choose Interval mode at 1 or 2 seconds and turn on Skip duplicates. Frames that look the same as the previous one are left out, so you get roughly one image per slide.
Is there a file size or length limit when I use the videos to frame converter?
There's no fixed limit; it depends on your device's memory. Very large jobs are stored in your browser's private storage as they're made. For long 4K videos, pick a range or an interval rather than every frame.
Does this video Frame Extractor work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, this video Frame Extractor works in Safari and Chrome. On a phone the Save to Photos button opens the share sheet so you can save frames to your camera roll, up to 20 at a time.
